Why 3D Architectural Visualization? Our founder, the Alchemist himself, Claudio De Marco stumbled upon the exciting world of 3D Rendering by absolute chance, one day seeing it as a way to push limits and to shatter the moulds of what architecture and invention should be. His 3D Visualization philosophy can simply be described as free because that is what Architectural Visualization should be: the freedom to fathom intricate designs in three-dimensional space, creating breath-taking beauty with every render. We create life, we create depth and dimension and most importantly we take the colourful concepts of 3D Rendering, 3D Animation and 3D Modeling to new heights: breathing life into unbuilt architecture.

Alchemist Design is a combination of 3D design, architecture, engineering, mad science and absolute magic! WHAT SOFTWARE DO WE USE?

We use only the highest quality applications and programmes to timeously produce 3D Models, 3D Renders, 3D Walkthroughs/Flythroughs and Interactive 3D Animations of the highest calibre.

Applications such as:

  • AutoCAD – an architectural programme used by architects and engineers to create floor plans, elevation and sections of anything that needs to be built or manufactured.
  • 3D Studio Max- a 3D computer graphics programme used by 3D Architectural Visualization studios for its modelling, rendering and animation features
  • V-Ray : a CGI rendering software programme with shading and illumination properties especially used for visualizations
  • Adobe Photoshop- a graphics editing programme used to edit and compose images in various features
  • Adobe After Effects- a visual effects and graphical composition application used especially for animations
  • Unreal Engine- an application using creation tools to create state of the art photo-realistic renders and VR simulations for architecture and product manufacturing
  • Z Brush- a digital sculpting application that uses lighting, colour, material properties for high resolution 3D Modeling and 3D Texturing

PROCESS

  • STEP 1 IS ALL ABOUT THE PLANS

    • Before the space is built in 3D, we require floor plans, elevations and section drawings usually in the form of AutoCAD files which will be presented in 2D. Seeing as our main goal is to convert our client’s ideas and concepts into aesthetic 3D representations, we require design, construction and architectural information or briefs to get the models started. We also work with SketchUp and Revit files from clients that have created their own 3D Models from which we can begin the render.
      For the renders, during the texturing phase we would require a brief of any desired textures or finishes pertaining to the interior or exterior design or a product so that we can get every colour, texture and design spot on.
  • THE 3D MODELING

    • Through the use of 3D Modeling, the size properties, texture and shape of any three-dimensional surfaces and objects such as 3D furniture are captured, creating a virtual 3D model.
    • 3D models can be made automatically with the use of a 3D scanner, but we at Alchemist Design make our models manually using specialized 3D modelling programmes. This entails us making a 3D model using specialized software, so basically virtually sculpting/building the model in three dimensional digital space and this is known as digital sculpting.
    • 3D modelling gives a very basic 3D view or picture of the represented space or object(s). At this point the model is simply a suspension of flat geometric shapes in three-dimensional space, simply a shell of the final product made using the architectural plans. During this phase the model can be used by architects or engineers to check the structural and architectural efficiency of the design.
    • 3D Models form the basis of the render from which visualization and animation can truly take form by the further application of various textures, lighting techniques, colour schemes and camera angles. Through
    • 3D modelling, we identify the surfaces of the design without fully bringing it to life as yet and through this process we remain in close contact with the client or the architect to verify the virtual representation of the design.
  • 3D RENDERING

    • Now the magic begins
    • In the beginning the 3D Model is a mere wire frame model in a virtual space, but in the realm of 3D Rendering, these models are morphed into intricate aesthetic images through the addition of texture styles and lighting.
      In this phase we use mainly the 3Ds Max programme along with plug-in software called VRay to initiate the render by laying the client’s desired colours, textures and surfaces on the architectural models. At this point the addition of the detailed design features and materials are made, but the render itself is far from a masterpiece.

      Next up the model and the scene as a whole is lit up! The materials in the scene have different properties of colour and texture thus they react differently to artificial lighting. The lighting phase is of utmost importance both before and after the application of textures to the model, for the simple reason that materials and textures absorb light, therefore more light is required when darker materials or objects are placed in the scene. For this part we specifically use VRay to calculate the varying levels of reflection and refraction as well as the gloss, the transparency and smoothness of the various textures to accurately reach a light-to-shadow balance and to make the scene as realistic as virtually possible.

      After the lighting comes an equally important part of the rendering process and that is the virtual camera placement. The camera is required to be positioned at an angle that best displays and frames the room or the object to achieve effective composition. Although a lot of the rendering part deals with working in the digital world it is important to remember that all renders are based on real life objects therefore we are skilled in camera work to deliver the most realistic effects.

      After lighting and camera it is up to the rendering software to verify the efficiency of all the camera angles and lights and to ensure that they are cohesive.

      And we wouldn't be masters of our trade if we weren’t perfectionists. Hence why we include a Post Production process in which we use the PhotoShop programme to fine tune the colour balance of the scene as well as to edit any errors that might occur such as oversaturation or lighting errors (some parts of the scene being too dark or too bright).

      After a few final aesthetic touches the render is brought to life and the art of 3D Visualization has taken true form. The computer then calculates the 3D Model Render in high resolution turning it into a top of the range 3D Architectural/Product Render which is now ready for presentation or to take it a step further, animation with various effects.
